Mapping a Network Drive-Windows Vista

These instructions assume that you are on a Windows Vista computer that is NOT already joined to CAMPUS. If you are joined to CAMPUS and are physically on UVM's campus, you should be able to open "Computer" and see drives mapped to your winhome and shared directories.

Students will not see mapped drives even if they do log onto a CAMPUS joined computer, nor do they have personal storage space under AD. Students can manually map a drive to a departmental shared directory however as long as they have the proper permissions to that directory and follow the directions for "Shared Directory" below.

If you are on campus you can map a network drive to your Active Directory storage space.

Personal Storage Space
  1. Double click the "Computer" icon on the desktop or right click "Computer" in the Start menu:
  2. Click the "Map network drive" icon along the top of the Computer window.
  3. Select an un-used drive letter, such as "M:"
  4. In the folder field enter: \\files\youruvmnetid replacing "youruvmnetid" with your UVM netID. If you are unsure as to what your UVM netID is look yourself up on the UVM Online Directory. Your UVM netID is listed at the bottom of your contact information.
  5. "Reconnect at logon" should be off if you are not on your own machine, on a public machine, or are connecting from someone else's user account. Otherwise you can leave "Reconnect at logon" turned on and Windows will reconnect you to this network drive when you log in.
  6. Click on "different user name" in "Connect using a different user name", which opens another window:
  7. Enter "CAMPUS\" in the User Name field, replacing with your UVM netID. Enter your UVM email password in the Password field.
  8. Then click OK. If you've done everything correctly you should see an open Windows Explorer window showing you the contents of your personal directory on Zoo. You may then copy files to and from the mapped drive as if it was a floppy disk or any other network volume.
