Gateway/Entry-Point Courses into Music Major/Minor

Students have several choices for gateway courses into a major or minor in music:

Music Theory
MU 109 Harmony and Form I + MU 054 Harmony and Form Lab I
For music majors and minors, this is the first semester of a four-semester music theory sequence. Study through writing and analysis of diatonic melody and harmony, phrase structure and elaborative techniques. Offered only in the fall. Three Credits for MU 109, one credit for MU 054.
MU 110 Harmony and Form II + MU 056 Harmony and Form Lab II

For music majors and minors, this is the second semester of a four-semester sequence for students accepted into the music major. Study of chromatic harmony, (applied chords, modulation) and small forms (binary, ternary, variation). Offered only in the spring. Three credits for MU 110, one credit for MU 056

Music History
MU 001 Introduction to Classical Music

A survey of musical styles from Medieval Gregorian chant to the present. No prerequisite. May not be counted toward the major. Three credits.

MU 005 Introduction to Jazz History

Survey of jazz from its roots in ragtime and blues of the late nineteenth century to contemporary styles. Prerequisite: Ability to read music, or permission of instructor. May not be counted toward the major. Three credits.

MU 006 American Music

Survey of American music from the Pilgrims to the present. Folk, popular, and classical music. Vernacular and cultivated traditions. No prerequisite. May not be counted toward the major. Three credits.
