Statistics

Overview

A lecturer teaching a statistics classThe Statistics Program has a long tradition — since 1973 — of providing undergraduate students with excellent teaching, as well as research and practical experience. Professors and lecturers offer an extensive variety of introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in the methods, theory and practice of statistics. All of the teaching faculty members have extensive experience working as consultants and/or researchers.

Solid work in math, statistics and electives create well-rounded majors

Majors take courses fundamental to an undergraduate mathematics major, such as calculus and matrix algebra. In addition, the statistics major offers both a solid education in statistical science and the opportunity to combine that education with other interests. Advisors encourage students to take courses in other disciplines that use statistics, such as computer science, natural resources, biology, economics, business administration, mathematics, psychology, premedical science, engineering and others. Faculty collaborate on research with the College of Medicine, College of Nursing and Health Sciences and School of Natural Resources. Several faculty work in the Medical Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Facility. Students assist these and other research groups on campus to gain practical experience. Also see: Mathematics.
