Spanish

Overview

Architectural detail of a historic university buildingThe Spanish major introduces students to the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world in Europe, Latin America and the United States. Students pursue the major in small classes taught by faculty who are experts in of Spanish language, cultures and literature. Spanish language social activities abound on campus and include Spanish films, weekly tertulias, or coffee hours, and an annual Hispanic Forum.

Interactions with Latin community and Spanish-speaking countries encouraged

Off campus, Burlington's Latin community welcomes students to dances, dinners and cultural events. Spanish majors are encouraged to study for a semester or a year abroad in Spain or Spanish America, and they have opportunities to participate in short-term programs in Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico. As the U.S. population becomes decidedly more Hispanic, knowledge of Spanish language cultural heritage is excellent preparation for further studies, travel or careers in Hispanic lands or among U.S. Spanish speakers. Many students find that a double major in Spanish with another field of interest provides even more career options.
