Outstanding students whose interests extend beyond the university's existing major offerings may propose individually designed, or self-designed, courses of study through most of UVM's undergraduate schools and colleges. A self-designed major typically blends two or more distinct academic areas of interest in a unique and well-defined course of study.
A student wishing to pursue a self-designed major works with a faculty advisor to develop an academic plan (class schedules, internships and/or other related learning experiences and evaluation criteria). The proposal is presented for approval to a faculty review committee and/or the dean's office of the school or college in which the student is enrolled. The objective is to establish a coherent and unique plan of study to meet the specific learning needs of the student and by which the student will achieve an advanced state of skills, knowledge and values in his or her chosen field.
Eligibility requirements for the self-designed option are defined by each school and college. In general, a candidate must present a solid academic record and a clear vision of his or her academic goals, and must identify and work with a faculty advisor/sponsor throughout the process of developing and pursuing a course of study.
Students considering a self-designed major are strongly encouraged to consult their dean's offices about this option before the end of the second semester of study.
