Physics is the fundamental science underlying the investigation of all natural phenomena. UVM's Physics Department takes prides in the quality of its teaching and vigorous research programs in biological physics, theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, the physics of materials, astrophysics and pulsar physics. Students develop close relationships with faculty, whose research is funded by the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, among other sources, and whose scholarship appears in journals such as Science, Nature and Physical Review Letters.
Faculty research collaborations with other departments, including the College of Medicine, allow students to explore new directions and meet experts in other disciplines. Physics majors develop a deep foundation of knowledge and problem-solving abilities important to a variety of careers. Students interested in graduate study attend some of the best programs in the country including the professional master's degree program at UVM, which the American Institute of Physics rates as among the nation's strongest.
