Performance is the pride of UVM's Music Department, and, consequently, all music students — whether their interests lie in arts management, teaching music or making music — perform with their peers in departmental bands, choirs and ensembles throughout the academic year. The department's comprehensive curriculum embraces genres from classical to jazz music, theory and history, singing and conducting.
Faculty artists offer applied lessons in all instruments and singing for academic credit. Music majors choose one of three degree programs: a bachelor of music or a bachelor of arts degree prepares students for careers as performers, scholars or administrators of music programs. The bachelor of science degree in music education, offered in conjunction with the College of Education and Social Services, leads to a kindergarten-through-12th-grade Vermont state teaching license. Small class size and opportunities to learn and perform with world-class musicians single this program out.
