Latin American Studies

Overview

People sitting on steps in a Latin American countryThe Latin American Studies Program, one of seven components of Area and International Studies, is a small but vibrant program that explores the histories, cultures, literatures, politics and economies of Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to U.S. Latinos.

Interdisciplinary approach understanding Latin America

Classes are taught by faculty with expertise in democratization, indigenous politics, human and community development, environmental conflicts, social movements, health, literature, race and ethnicity, gender dynamics and archaeology, among other fields. The Latin American Studies Program sponsors guest speakers, artists and activists and organizes faculty-led study courses in Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba and several Spanish Caribbean countries. Majors are encouraged to take advantage of study-abroad programs, conduct internships and participate in cultural events. Graduates pursue careers in policy analysis, government, research, journalism, business, international development, higher education and activism in the United States and throughout Latin America.
