The Italian studies major at the University of Vermont offers students opportunities for advanced study in both the Italian language and in the history and culture of Italy. Students take small classes with professors who are active scholars in diverse aspects of Italian language, society and literature.
Italian language social activities include off-campus coffee hours, or tavolas; the preparation and enjoyment of authentic Italian meals; an Italian film series; and presentations on Italian arts. The program's small-community spirit provides students with regular contact with native speakers and others who know Italy and its heritage. Majors acquire the linguistic skills necessary to interact with native speakers and to enjoy Italian books and films in their native language, and may choose to study in Italy. Majors go on to graduate studies or use their knowledge of Italian language and culture to launch a variety of careers.
