Some of history's finest philosophers and most brilliant writers have called the German language their own. German majors at UVM develop the linguistic skills to read and analyze these literary texts, from the Middle Ages to the present, in their original form.
The German and Russian Department, to which German majors belong, also offers a firm grounding in the literature, culture and history of Austria, Germany and Switzerland through a rigorous course of study and intimate learning environment. Distinguished and widely published faculty offer small classes and enjoy working with and advising students. Close affiliations with the university's Center for Holocaust Studies and Hebrew Language Program provide students with access to a wide variety of courses and potential faculty advisors. After four semesters of German, majors are encouraged to study abroad for at least one semester with the department's sister programs at the University of Salzburg and University of Augsburg or at institutions in other international cities.
