The University of Vermont

French

Overview

A student visits the Eiffel Tower on a study abroadThe French major provides insight into the culture, history and traditions of the Francophone world in Europe, North America and Africa. Students take small classes taught by faculty who are active scholars in diverse aspects of French language, society and literature. The university is located close to French-speaking Quebec and to Montreal, the second largest French-speaking city in the world.

Emphasis on French heritage and language

Vermont has a strong French Canadian heritage, and several Canadian television and radio stations are broadcast into the state directly from Quebec. French majors are encouraged to study for a semester or a year abroad at universities in the French-speaking world and to participate in many French language social activities on campus and in the community. The program also has ties to UVM's Canadian Studies Program. Upon graduation, many French majors pursue graduate studies or use their knowledge of French language and cultures to launch a variety of careers in the United States and in French-speaking countries.

  • Graduate school: Alumni have gone on to highly rated graduate programs in French, received Fulbright grants to conduct research abroad and received French government assistantships to teach English in France.
