English is one of the university's most popular majors, and for good reason. The curriculum embraces a global canon of literary and cultural studies. The English department shines in a number of ways:

Careers: About 30 percent of English majors are involved in education. They work as teachers, administrators, guidance counselors and librarians at public and private elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities. Others find careers in business and finance, law, government, publishing and the health professions. Recent alumni are working at places such as HBO, Boston Medical Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and publishing companies such as St. Martin's Press. Grads are also employed by many law offices and investment firms throughout the U.S.
Graduate school: English majors have an excellent placement record at some of the nation's most prestigious graduate programs in English, medicine, law, journalism and education.
