The University of Vermont

English

Overview

A professor in the English DepartmentEnglish is one of the university's most popular majors, and for good reason. The curriculum embraces a global canon of literary and cultural studies. The English department shines in a number of ways:

  • small class sizes
  • access to visiting writers, speakers, scholars (Recent visiting authors who have given readings and conducted special classes include Michael Ondaatje, Lorrie Moore, Galway Kinnell, Stephen King and John Edgar Wideman.)
  • a strong focus on creative writing and composition
  • African-American, post-colonial and women's writing offerings
  • a diverse and distinguished community of faculty scholars and artists
  • a burgeoning interdisciplinary component in film and television studies

Emphasizing, as it does, precision of thought and clarity of expression, as well as critical thinking and research methods, an English major is a fine preparation for a variety of careers.
