Overview

Student and professor at a computerComputer science is a vibrant subject of academic depth, enormous growth and universal economic impact. Computers have revolutionized the way we understand the world, the way we learn and, of course, the way we do business.

Computing and practical application in the business world

UVM's Computer Science Department prepares students for a world needing a technical understanding of the fundamentals of computation along with the wisdom to know how to use computers for the benefit of communities, businesses and society. UVM offers students an opportunity to combine their study of computer science with a wide variety of other subjects. The computer science and information systems major is especially designed to address the computer's interface with the business world. This major in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sceinces' Computer Science Department is a hybrid of computer science and business administration. It features a mixture of hands-on experience in labs, small lectures on fundamental concepts and discussions of societal issues in computing. Of note: None of the courses targeted at majors allows more than 36 students in a single section. Also see: Computer Science.

Career Directions

  • Careers: The number of people using and programming computers in every-day settings has soared, but the number of people skilled in upper-level computer technology, software design and technology is few. Demands are high for computer scientists.

While many recent alumni have continued their studies with graduate programs, others have gone on to jobs at IBM, Siemens, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Immigration Service, Goodrich Corporation, IDX, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Motorola, Raytheon, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and many other employers.
