Overview

UVM's Computer Science Department teaches the fundamentals of computation and enables graduates to guide the applications of computers for the benefit of communities, businesses and society.

A major that works in concert with other subjects

Computer Science may be pursued either through the university's College of Engineering and Mathematics or the College of Arts and Sciences. Of note: None of the courses targeted at computer science majors allows more than 36 students in a single section. Also see: Computer Science and Information Systems.

Career Directions

  • Careers: The number of people using and programming computers in everyday settings has soared, but the number of people skilled in upper-level computer technology, software design and technology is few. Demands are high for computer scientists.

    While many recent alumni have continued their studies with graduate programs, others have gone on to jobs at IBM, Siemens, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Immigration Service, Goodrich Corporation, IDX, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Motorola, Raytheon, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and many other employers.
