Chemistry provides a solid foundation for pursuing a career in a wide variety of areas, including medicine, biotechnology, law and business. Majors planning on making chemistry a career earn a bachelor of science degree (American Chemical Society certified); the UVM program allows students to study chemistry within a broader study of liberal arts or other scientific disciplines. Majors take a general course of study or a biomolecular or environmetnal concentration.
Chemistry students learn to be creative thinkers and clear communicators as well as scientists under the guidance of internationally recognized faculty who excel in teaching, advising and research. Faculty regularly garner funding from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Defense, among others, for research in areas that include biomedical applications, electrochemistry, materials science and drugs for cancer treatments.

Graduate school: Top students have their pick of the nation's best graduate schools. Recent alumni are now studying at the University of California-Berkeley and Harvard, Stanford and Northwestern universities.
Careers: A chemistry degree provides excellent training for careers in the petroleum and pharmaceutical industries, food chemistry, commodity chemicals, custom synthesis, environmental chemistry, polymers and plastics, and materials sciences.
Recent graduates work in forensics, medicine, materials science, computer science, engineering, physics and patent law.
