UVM established the first comprehensive Canadian Studies Program at an American university in 1964. The program, one of seven disciplines in the Area and International Studies Program, remains top-notch at providing students with a broad understanding of Canada's history, politics, economics and environmental science, and the cultural and historical heritage of Quebec. Students are often encouraged to combine an interest in Canada with a second major such as history, geography, international business or political science to prepare for a wide variety of careers.
Students attend seminars, workshops, film festivals, cultural events and professional conferences in Canada and Vermont. They also visit historic, cultural and anthropologically significant sites in Canada. Faculty have held leadership posts in the Association for Canadian Studies, the International Council for Canadian Studies and the American Council for Quebec Studies, and many have earned awards, including the prestigious Donner Medal, the highest American honor in the field of Canadian studies.
