Biology

Overview

Students conducting research in a labBiology majors at UVM choose from concentrations in cell and molecular biology, neurobiology, environmental biology, forensic biology and pre-professional (including medical and veterinary biology), or they remain generalists.

Hands-on learning

The department focuses on learning by "doing science" through small, experience-based classes, research and close faculty interaction and mentoring. Biology professors are respected, top-notch scientists who receive nearly $1.3 million in grants each year from organizations including the National Institutes of Health, Environmental Protection Agency and National Science Foundation. Student participation in research is encouraged and supported by stipends, departmental and university grant programs and awards. Consequently, during both the academic year and the summer you'll find biology students in the lab and the field, getting their hands dirty alongside faculty.

Cross-college integrated major

Students who choose the new cross-college Integrated Biological Science major, which leads to a bachelor of science degree, share the same core courses with students in the bachelor of arts program but take more upper-level courses in the biological sciences. For more information, see the Integrated Biological Science's website.
