Asian Studies

Overview

Children smilingAsian studies, one of seven areas of study in UVM's program for Area and International Studies offers both a major and a minor in the study of Asian culture, history and society. The interdisciplinary program is composed of 21 faculty members noted for their excellence in teaching and scholarship.

Language, history and culture

Courses are drawn from 10 disciplines, and topics range from Asian art to interpretations of Eastern religions. Majors, who learn the Chinese or Japanese language up to the intermediate level, are encouraged to study abroad for at least one semester. On-campus educational and social events such as lectures, workshops and cultural performances are common. With thousands of U.S. companies investing and trading in Asia, career prospects for students with cultural knowledge and Asian language skills are excellent.
