Art Education

Overview

A student observing a professor's painting techniqueThe art education program at UVM combines the studio and art history components of the Art Department with art education and professional education requirements. Courses are taken in both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education and Social Services. Students work in public schools and at alternative sites including museums, galleries, hospitals, correctional institutions, craft schools, programs for the elderly, and mental health and human service organizations.

Program culminates in classroom preparedness

The program ends with a semester of teaching under the supervision of a master art educator. Students graduate with a kindergarten-through-12th-grade Vermont state license that shares reciprocity with several other states; the program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

  • Careers: Graduates work as educators in public and private schools as well as colleges and universities, in arts administration, art therapy, museums, arts program development, filmmaking, gallery direction, theater and interior and architectural design.

  • Graduate school: Many graduates pursue advanced degrees in education, studio art, art therapy and museum education.
