CLAS 022 – Etymology

Course Description: The study of English vocabulary derived from Greek and Latin. Topics include analysis of word formation, historical and comparative linguistics, and international scientific terminology.

Section Description: A thematic treatment of the roots of the vocabulary of the English language. Particular attention is given to those which derived from Greek, Latin and the Indo-European languages, though many loan-words from other language families will be considered. Both scientific (medical, technical, astronomical, legal, etc.) and literary words, phrases and idioms will also be investigated.
