Course Description: Study of jazz harmony, including essential harmonic progressions, turnarounds, chord substitutions, and melody harmonization. Prerequisite: MU 009 or equivalent music theory fundamentals proficiency. Co-requisite: MU 104.
Section Description: This course is a study of jazz harmony, including essential harmonic progressions, turnarounds, chord substitutions, and melody harmonization. Jazz Studies concentrators take MU 104 Jazz Harmony Lab concurrently. MU 103 is designed to cultivate intellectual understanding and technical abilities fundamental to the subject of music. Class work and homework will sharpen skills in reading, writing, and thinking about music, through such means as practice in recognizing the elements of music and investigating the principles of chord spelling, function, and progressions, melodic voice leading, and common jazz forms. A text such as The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine is used.
