BSAD 015 – Business Communications

Course Description: Provides students a basic understanding of professional business communications. Prerequisite: Business Administration major; First-year/Sophomore standing only.

Section Description: Permission: Contact Stephanie Loscalzo (; Restricted to Business majors who are enrolled in USPP, GGP, or any other approved program. Section C is designed for students whose first language is not English. Open to degree and CDE students (international). This course is designed to develop the writing and oral presentation skills required for success in the workplace. Course materials will focus on business vocabulary. Students will learn writing practices that produce effective business letters, emails, memoranda, and reports. Organization, conciseness, professional tone, and appropriate vocabulary are emphasized. Basic skills (grammar, sentence structure, etc.) will be addressed as required. It is expected that students will complete the course with an improved ability to express themselves clearly, precisely, and persuasively in any professional setting. The course will also introduce basic concepts of oral presentation. The oral presentation component will include both practice and graded presentations. Students will learn fundamental presentation techniques and appropriate use of presentation software. A major focus of this course is reading and vocabulary building. Students will be expected to make note of key vocabulary and phrases in order to understand the content, as well as improve their own English writing skills. Course Objectives The course is intended to impart knowledge and understanding of professional writing and oral presentation with a focus on learning practical skills. The course provides an opportunity for students to work independently and in groups. The outcomes for the course include: 1. Understanding different approaches to professional writing based on context, purpose, and audience. 2. Writing clear and effective emails, messages, memoranda, letters, resumes, and reports. 3. Developing professional tone and style, with a focus on business-related vocabulary. 4. Learning to write in a process that involves researching, organizing, drafting, reviewing, and revising. 5. Developing, designing, and delivering presentations.
