Course Description: Provides the foundation needed to implement an integrated approach to designing, presenting, and evaluating an English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum across content areas while providing an important understanding of the qualities of children's literature. Prerequisites: EDEC 140; Praxis Core Requirement Fulfilled; Early Childhood PreK-3 majors; or Instructor permission. Co-requisites: EDEC 156, EDEC 179, and EDEC 181.
Section Description: This course will introduce the students to beginning reading and writing instruction typical of Kindergarten to grade 3 classrooms. Literacy topics will include learning and instruction in oral language development, phonemic awareness, vocabulary and comprehension, phonics and writing. Taking a socio-cultural/socio-cognitive lens, we will explore and practice the types of teacher-student interactions that scaffold learning in the classroom. Students will use informational and narrative texts, especially in STEM topics, to learn and practice teaching literacy through the disciplines.
