Course Description: Learning about the breadth of literature available for use in elementary school. Developing the ability to evaluate and use literature in reading and writing activities. Emphasis on bias-free methods. Pre/co-requisites: Admission to Elementary Teacher Education Program; concurrent with EDEL 156, EDEL 175 and EDEL 176.
Section Description: The focus of this course is the development of a rich and functional knowledge base related to literature for children from a developmental perspective. You will read widely from books representing a variety of genres, authors, artistic representations, and perspectives. You will apply your knowledge of children's literature as you learn about research-based instructional practices for teaching reading and writing across the subject areas. Throughout the course, you will practice evaluating, selecting, and matching texts to learning objectives and learners’ interests and abilities so to increase both motivation and skill in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
