Vermont is rich with recreation and outdoor activities year-round. Burlington is located in the back yard of the best skiing and riding mountains in the East, hiking trails, serene waterways and rock faces. For a more civilized experience, the local restaurants and shopping never disappoint.
Have it all — every day, every season: We are lucky to experience the beauty of all four seasons — the classic New England scenes of maple trees ablaze with fall colors; the exquisite views of snow-covered mountains; the hillsides blossoming with wildflowers in the spring; and swimming and sailing on Lake Champlain during hot summer days.
Natural Areas: Live in a city but never be far from a quiet place or moment. In addition to the proximity of the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain, a number of options are available even closer through UVM-operated natural areas and farms. Learn about bogs, mountains, woods, quarries, ponds on UVM Natural Areas. Walk through the UVM Horticulture Farm. Visit the Morgan Horse Farm.
Burlington's average high temperature in August is 78 degrees Fahrenheit and in January, 25 degrees. The city gets an average of 92 inches of snow each year. See the current Burlington weather (NOAA website).
Attractions: Boutiques, museums, historic inns, breweries, artisan workshops and galleries, specialty shops, gourmet restaurants and more. See what the Church Street Marketplace has to offer. Learn more on the Vermont Attractions Association website.
Outdoor sports: You name it, we've got it. Biking, canoeing, climbing, skiing (all varieties), fishing, horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, sailing, skydiving, snowshoeing, snowboarding, the list goes on. UVM's Outing Club is just one of the many resources available to outdoor enthusiasts (or those who aspire to be), while the Student Government Association's sponsored clubs offer opportunities to get involved (fishing club, sailing club, etc.)
