This summer, the Women’s Agricultural Network will co-host two day-long, farm-based workshops to provide beginning farmers with practical information on production and marketing approaches for small and diversified farms.

From the Ground Up" will be held on August 7 in South Londonderry at Anjali Farms and Lotus Moon Medicinals, a certified organic farm producing heirloom vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, eggs, perennial fruit and honey for direct retail markets. The day will include sessions on building and maintaining soil fertility in horticultural systems, pest management approaches, and strategies for developing farm infrastructure and direct marketing for “off-the beaten path” operations. Presenters will include Anjali owner-operators Emmett Dunbar and Lini Mazumdar and UVM Vegetable and Berry Specialist Vern Grubinger. FromtheGroundUp2008Registration.pdf

*Please note: From the Ground Up will be held on *Thursday* August 7 (there was a mis-print in the program brochure). Hope to see you there!

Water, Wire & Wellness” will be held on August 13 in Huntington, Vt, at Maple Wind Farm, a diversified farm producing pasture-based pork, beef, lamb and poultry, as well as vegetables and maple products for direct markets. The day will focus on farm infrastructure and animal health in pasture-based systems, and sessions on fencing, watering systems and animal health. Presenters will include Maple Wind’s Bruce Hennessey, UVM Livestock Specialist Sam Comstock and Vermont Pasture Network Coordinator Jennifer Colby. WaterWireWellness2008Registration.pdf

Both workshops are geared to aspiring and beginning farmers, and will include plenty of time for questions and informal discussion. Both workshops will run from 9 am to 3 pm, rain or shine. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged; space is limited and registrations will be accepted first-come, first-served basis.

The registration for each workshop is $25. Visit www.uvm.edu/wagn and click on “WAgN Workshops” for more information or to download a registration form. Or, email wagn@uvm.edu or call 802-223-2389x15.

The workshops are co-sponsored by University of Vermont Extension, Center for Sustainable Agriculture, with funding from USDA-CSREES, USDA Risk Management Agency and the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education.
