The Contact Period in the Northeast was a time-transgressive era of sweeping changes. Explore this era of turmoil and trade as documented in historic and archeological records of Native American, French, English, and Dutch sites. Presentations by noted Contact Period researchers, accompanied by rare hands-on laboratory opportunity to view characteristic artifacts and replicas.

8:30-9:00 Pre-registered participants pick-up workshop materials, coffee, etc.
9:00-10:00 Robert Grumet (Mid-Atlantic Region of the National Park Service), author of Historic Contact: Early Relations Between Indians and Colonists in Northeastern North America, 1524-1783 will set the stage for the Contact Period Workshop.
10:00-10:20 Fred Wiseman (Johnson State College) has masterfully replicated Abenaki cultural materials and arts, guided by historic documents, illustrations, oral records, archeological examples, and creativity.
10:20-11:20 Interactive Discussion/Laboratory
11:20-11:40 Peter Thomas (Consulting Archaeology Program, University of Vermont) has researched Contact Period changes at Native American sites, including Fort Hill.
11:40-12:40 Lunch (on your own - meet at Sewards Family Restaurant "back room" )
12:40-1:40 Interactive Discussion/Laboratory
1:40-2:00 Paul Huey (N.Y.S. Parks and Rec., Div. for Historic Preservation) worked extensively in the Albany, New York area on Dutch Contact Period Sites.
2:00-3:00 Interactive Discussion/Laboratory
3:00-3:20 Neill De Paoli (University of New Hampshire) has investigated early British settlements such as Fort Pemaquid, Maine.
3:20-4:20 Interactive Discussion/Laboratory
4:20-4:40 Pierre-Jacques Ratio (Archeobec) offers a unique perspective, including views of French continental sites, Native American sites in Quebec, and early historic settlement of the Montreal area.
4:40-5:40 Interactive Discussion/Laboratory
