We heard from several classmates for this issue. Lillian “Bunny”
Cotnoir Doyle still enjoys skiing. She continues her language interests
by teaching ESL conversation. She is active in Toastmasters, and she also
creates stained glass artwork. Lillian extends a big welcome to Vermont
alumni and alumnae (she was a Latin teacher, so this is correct) to visit
her in Amarillo, Tex. She would love to hear from other UVMers at any
time. Florence Cacioppo-Jahn is in the process of moving back to Stuart,
Fla. She sees Robert Taisey and Abbey and Andrew Brown once a year. Florence
has two granddaughters, both studying art. She spends her summers in Wilkes
Barre, Pa. Newell Curtis wrote from his home on Block Island, R.I., that
he and his wife, Jane, joined an ecumenical choir, and they gave five
performances last summer. He wrote, “Windswept, remote Block Island
is a grand place for singing.” Please send your news to me at the

James Downs, who lives in Knoxville, Tenn., was sorry to have missed our
50th reunion. We hope you can make the next one, James. Polly Buttrick
Ketro is “ecstatic” to announce the birth of her first grandchild.
Both grandparents are doing well. Paul Kilty of Honolulu, Hawaii, lost
his wife of 43 years last August. It is sad to report that Jean Hard Queale
died unexpectedly last March. She leaves her husband, Donald, two daughters,
and four grandchildren. Jean was a friend to all who knew her, and we
will miss her. Our hearts go out to the Kilty and Queale families.

Alice Hanbridge King of New Port Richey, Fla., is still involved in music.
She was with the Sweet Adelines for 30 years, and she coaches and sings
with small groups. Alice and Leo take cruises and travel within the U.S.
and sometimes abroad. She enjoys hiking, swimming, gardening, and composing
music. She reported that Joanna King ’82 is a corporate lawyer in
Washington, D.C., and Margaret Stevenson ’62 is a retired teacher
from Lucerne, N.Y., and Naples, Fla. Kenneth Reid of Roseville, Calif.,
has raised five sons and one daughter. He wrote, “Got lucky; my last
was a girl.” Kenneth retired in 1991 from McClellan Air Force Base,
where he spent 34 years. He now does some building in and around Sacramento,
Calif. He has fond memories of our class. David and Ann Johnson (’53)
Hartzell will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2003.
They have four children and 11 grandchildren. David retired as purchasing
manager from American National Can Co., after 35 years with the company.
He was active in volunteer efforts in New Jersey and now enjoys life in
the South. Bertina Pope Lawliss sadly reported the death of her husband,
Don G’65. They had been very active in UVM affairs and reunions since
graduation. Don will be greatly missed. George Brady let us know early
that he was planning to come to our reunion. We all had fun at his house
after a previous reunion. By the time this goes to press, we will have
had our 50th reunion. Hope you all had a happy and memorable time.

Our column is active this quarter. Classmates are already inquiring about
our 50th reunion next year (May 29-June 1, 2003). Details will be forthcoming
in future issues of Vermont Quarterly. Walt Bailey retired several years
ago from Philco/Ford/Loral in Palo Alto, Calif. He now lives in Grass
Valley, spending part of the time on Lake Almanor. He noted, ”I have
‘UVM VT’ on my California license plate. It’s amazing how
many people in this area know what that stands for.” James Atkins
lives in Florida and has retired as a high school math teacher and coach.
He and his wife will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in
August. Some classmates are still active in the business/services world.
Jack Durett, who still lives in Burlington, Vt., owns and manages 14 financial
planning offices. He won a trip to Hawaii for business growth. (All work
and no play won’t make this Jack a dull boy.) Mary Sanford Dodge
of Denver, Colo., is busy with antiquarian books. She reported that she
and Bob spent October on a used-book buying trip through a number of Western
states. They also attended the annual reunion of their high school from
Peking, China. The event was held in Pasadena, Calif. Henry Manners is
still representing five firms as a sales representative in the horticultural
field in eastern New York State and western New England. Walter Meyer
of Townshend, Vt., is still active with Mary Meyer Stuffed Toys. He reported
that he has four sons in the family business, plus 16 grandchildren. Richard
Burns, a mechanical engineer in product design and engineering, reported
that he has been active in canoe racing and run-bike-canoe team triathlons.
Helen Wippich Green of Guilford, Conn., sells real estate locally and
travels. She wrote, “We celebrated our 30th anniversary last year
by cruising around Cape Horn for several weeks and visiting many scenic
and cultural sites in Chile and Argentina as well as the Falkland Islands.
A fabulous trip!” Mary Wilson Priesing has enjoyed traveling to Sicily
and their house on Kiawah Island, S.C. She has visited several times each
year with Phyllis Burke Davis and her husband. Rhoda Davison Rochat, former
Kake Walk Queen, hopes to attend our 50th reunion. In January, she described
her occupation as “caregiver.” Idolyn Flower Ahearn was recently
given a surprise birthday party by her husband. Among those attending
were her college roommate, Barbara Laselle Bredthauer, and Marietta Bond
(’54) McCarthy. Home economics majors were saddened to learn of the
death of classmate Margaret Wood of Danbury, Conn., fondly known at UVM
as “Sis.” She had been active in her church and garden club
as well as an ardent skier, bicyclist, tennis player, and watercolor artist.
Bernard Kabakow, MD, continues to practice medicine full time. Last June,
he was visiting professor of medicine oncology at Minsk Medical University
in Belarus. Mark Pitman, MD, has retired from his active orthopedic practice.
As emeritus chief of sports medicine, he still keeps busy with resident
and fellow teaching research at the Hospital for Joint Disease.

Donald Novick wrote to let me know that he is receiving Vermont Quarterly
in South Australia. He is looking forward to hearing from his many UVM
friends, especially Andrew Gerber. I remember that Andy provided us with
some extra 1954 Ariels several years ago. Andy, please get in touch with
me for Don’s address and to share some news for our next column.
Lucien Cote, MD, reported that he is still practicing neurology at Columbia
University, specializing in Parkinson’s disease. He and his wife
are looking forward to attending our 50th reunion in 2004. Robert Marcotte
of Essex Junction, Vt., reported that he has a “woodmizer” sawmill
and has been recycling trees in his development, making oak flooring,
clapboards, and the like. He also has his own solar kiln. He appeared
on the Dream Builders on HGTV. David Kearney praised UVM for giving him
“a solid foundation for his later accomplishments.” These include
serving as a faculty member and administrator at Butler University, the
University of Alabama, and the University of South Florida. Along the
way, he found time to earn MA and PhD degrees. Your class secretary is
a board member of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation, chairing the
communications committee and editing the quarterly newsletter. The foundation
will offer a tribute to Burlington-born First Lady Grace Goodhue Coolidge
’02 at UVM on September 7.

Hi, everyone. Now that summer is upon us, I hope that wherever you are
you are having fun. Bill and I are looking forward to good times with
the grandkids at the beach in Connecticut. I haven’t received much
news this time around, so our column will be brief. Geraldine Quinn Dankowski
and her family enjoy the summer months at their cottage on Lake St. Catherine
in Vermont. She wrote, “UVMers are always welcome!” A lovely

Nancy McGoughran Blanchet wrote that she and Lorrie Beuhler Farwell have
participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk-a-thon in honor
of Carolyn Craig Williams, a dear friend and sorority sister who died
of the disease. They hope that others who knew and loved “Cecil”
will participate in the walk. Lorrie and her husband, Bill Farwell ’57,
live in the Washington, D.C., area. Carol Parker Day and her husband,
Basil, retired after operating a shoe store in Barre, Vt., for 20 years.
They are now enjoying golf, fishing, and grandchildren. Gerald Sevits
of New York City is in his ninth year of retirement. Dorothy Moody Miller
and husband Melton ’55 have traveled extensively. Along with her
interests in music and travel, Dorothy edits her church’s newsletter.

We have had lots of news from our classmates recently. Leo O’Brien
of South Burlington, Vt., reported that he retired as chairperson of the
Merchants Bank in Burlington, Vt., after 31 years as a board member. Ronald
Hill continues cross-country skiing in Stow, Mass., and suggests that
classmates may contact him at ronald.
hill5@worldnet.att.net. Jane Squires Sherwin retired in 1990 after a long
career as home economics teacher in Connecticut and Missouri. Jane and
husband Phil celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in June 2001. The
Sherwins live six months in their log cabin in Arlington, Vt., and six
months in Phoenix, Ariz. They spend time with their three children and
three grandchildren. Edward Walker of White Plains, N.Y. is still tearing
up golf courses, finishing in the top ten in two golf tournaments with
classmate Ron Grossman. Ed recently attended a UVM alumni lecture in New
York City with Bill Infeld, and he saw Bob Koones ’59 and Dr. Dick
Stein ’59 at the Winner’s Circle in New York not long ago. Laura
Walsh Lovett of Wolfeboro, N.H., let us know that she and her husband,
Tom, have retired and are now “professional grandparents,” spending
their time with their 20 grandchildren. Richard Everett sent greetings
from Oswego, N.Y. Mary Palmer Simpers of Colchester, Vt., was a member
of the Vermont House of Representatives for 14 years. She served on various
committees, including education, health, and welfare, and institutions
and corrections. Doug Burke wrote that he and his family enjoy Birch Island,
Maine, from May to October and Naples, Fla., from October through May.
The Rev. Sally Carr Sprague of Trumbull, Conn., let us know that her son,
Daniel, is chief biologist for “Operation Migration,” a project
raising whooping cranes, teaching them to migrate, and building up the
only migrating group on the East Coast. Ruthann Hadley Spaulding of Queensbury,
N.Y., visits Anne King Gordon in Shelburne, Vt., several times a year
and she also stays in contact with Shirley Long Demetrules and her husband,
who live in East Corinth, Vt. Ruthann wrote that they enjoy going to flea
markets but that they do more visiting than shopping. Nelson Slack of
Waterville, Vt., has won numerous awards as a Vermont maple sugar maker.
Retired from UVM, Philip Cook operates Poker Hill Gardens Nursery in Underhill,
Vt. Robert Wolfe of Danbury, Conn., was reappointed to the judiciary’s
client security fund committee by the Connecticut chief justice. Katherine
Warren Schriever and her husband, Henry, of Loveladies, N.J., is enjoying
life with their nine grandchildren. They also help their oldest son with
his mariculture business. Marilyn Bolton Perrin and husband Dave of Charlotte,
Vt., completed their quest of canoeing in Vermont’s 251 towns in
2000.

We’ve got mail this time. Our 45th Reunion (clustered with the classes
of 1957 and 1959) will be on May 29-June 3, 2003. Be sure to mark you
calendar and start making plans to join us for a fun celebration. Carol
Conner Frei is already planning her trip to Vermont. Our class needs a
“Web officer.” If you can help, get in touch with the Alumni
Office. I. Stanford Zecher is retired and splitting his time between Manchester,
Vt., and Surprise, Ariz. He spends lots of time trying to play golf. Roger
Baker, MD, is enjoying retirement in Rutland, Vt. Michael Turianski is
slowly recovering from an auto accident in 1998 but loves retirement in
North Carolina. Louise Lewis Alcorn loves teaching in Moab, Utah. She
wrote that her school is in desperate need of three-quarter-size violins.
Any help out there? Joe Long of Fair Lawn, N.J., works for Passaic Affordable
Housing, assisting people who normally couldn’t buy a home in doing
so. Gwendolyn McGrath has had many careers since UVM: teacher, social
worker in nursing homes, developer of an ombudsman program for the Vermont
Office on Aging, and director of a day care center in Americorp. She is
currently in community development in Rutland, Vt. Roger Madon has been
dabbling in national politics. He was interviewed for a White House position
as assistant secretary of labor and was offered another position that
he did not accept. What next? Please keep the mailbox full.

This is the time to begin making plans for our 45th reunion to be held
on May 29-June 1, 2003. Please mark it down on your 2003 calendar. This
will be a cluster of three classes: ’57, ’58, and ’59.
Reunion is a wonderful opportunity to renew old friendships and strengthen
the bonds that make our class special. Make your plans and remind other
classmates when you see them or correspond with them. David Hagberg of
Pacific Palisades, Calif., is a prolific world traveler. He reported that
he has seven timeshare residences that he has parlayed into trips to England,
Italy, Malta, Spain, Morocco, Oran, Cabo San Lucas, and Paris. His most
recent trip, although not quite exotic, has been cross country to Cape
Cod. Nancy Coolidge Eaton of Perkinsville, Vt., wrote that she has retired
from the Vermont Department of Social Welfare. She and her husband live
in Weathersfield, Vt., and would love to hear from UVM classmates. Durward
Starr of North Troy, Vt., retired in July 2000 after having practiced
veterinary medicine in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom for 37 years.
He and his wife, Lorraine, live in Vermont in the summertime, growing
certified organic foods, and they spend the winter months in Fort Myers,
Fla. Their son, Gregory ’85, is port director for the U.S. Customs
Service in northwestern Vermont. Son Geoffrey, MD ’91, is a neurologist
in Virginia. Durward and Lorraine have four grandchildren. Edward Ellis
of Newton Center, Mass., and his wife, Laney, enjoyed a mini-reunion at
the home of Art Blumberg in Hartford, Conn., along with Elliott Brown
of Washington, D.C., Gary Sanders of New Rochelle, N.Y., and their wives.
What a great intro to our 45th Reunion in 2003! Except for Maine and New
Hampshire, Vermont is about as far as you can get from semi-rural Riverside
County, Calif., yet Nancie Anderson Weber reported with much excitement
discovering that Joan Kienast Wingate (’57) Bitterman is one of her
neighbors in Canyon Lake. Joan reminded us that Nancie was the only senior
in phys ed class still trying to fulfill graduation requirements. Most
recently, Joan again distinguished herself as the oldest female in the
annual polar bear water ski run. Not like Lake Champlain, but nippy nevertheless.

Maynard North has been active in the Learning in Retirement Insititue
of the University of South Florida Education Outreach Division, leading
classes in themes associated with classical music. He is currently a member
of the Institute’s board of advisors. Bryna Alper of Rancho Palos
Verdes, Calif., was recently appointed development director at the non-profit
Norris Center. She is “writing grant proposals and patiently waiting
for my first positive response (meaning money).” Edward and Barbara
Evans Little are both retired and living in their mountainside home in
Mendon, Vt., overlooking the Rutland Valley.

John Brown of Essex Junction, Vt., has been retired for two years. He
has enjoyed vacationing in Tuscany and Zambia with his daughter. John
is an active volunteer in community service organizations and serves as
a hike leader for the Green Mountain Club as well as activities organizer
and shelter builder. He received the 2001 Roy Buchanan Award for 10 years
of service to the Green Mountain Club. Linda Leffel Landow and her husband,
Lloyd, of Dix Hills, N.Y., have built a vacation home in Westhampton Beach,
N.Y., which will be the family compound for their children and six grandchildren.
Sandra Honig-Haftel of Cromwell, Conn., has started a real estate development
company with her husband, Carl. She also serves on the board of the UNH
business school. Son Michael attends the Avon Old Farms School. Sandra
and Carl have two grandchildren, and they have traveled to Australia,
New Zealand, Fiji, Italy, and Alaska. Howard Maltz felt sad and nostalgic
when he learned of the death of our classmate, Jon Tenzer. Howard composed
a poem in Jon’s memory: “The Vermont Quarterly told me, Jon,
that you had passed away; My thoughts went reeling back in time over many
yesterdays; In 1958, as freshmen, we met at UVM; To a fraternity you led
the way for me and other friends; …On feline feet you were a treat
as Charlie Catamount; Your work in student government made all our voices
count; And though it is too late, Jon, to say these words to you; I know
I speak for all our mates, the class of ’62; Your life illuminates
the stage of those treasured college years; I raise my glass to thank
you, Jon, and wipe away the tears.” Ed Friedman is concluding a $23
million construction project, including a new home for the Hearing, Speech,
and Deafness Center, for which he has been executive director for 16 years.
He also actively hikes, bikes, and goes bird and whale watching throughout
the Northwest. The youngest of his three sons will enter the freshman
honors program at the University of Oregon. He would love to hear from

Kae Gleason Dakin of Washington, D.C., was named chair of the board of
directors of Women In Community Service (WICS), a national non-profit
organization helping women and youth out of poverty into economic self-sufficiency.
James Durrell wrote from Harrisburg, Pa., that he retired as CEO of Waypoint
Bank. He now enjoys traveling and spending time with his six grandchildren.
Joan Powell Kerzner and her husband, Arnold, MD ’63, of Belmont,
Mass., have participated in three mission trips with Global Volunteers:
Romania, Bellows Falls, Vt., and Costa Rica. Carole Nagelsmith Greenberg
wrote from Greenwich, Conn., that she and Steven Grossman ’61 had
plans to meet Dr. Peter Loeman ’61 and his wife, Susan, in Vail,
Colo., for their annual ski weekend last winter. Judith Goldberg Goldsmith
of Newington, Conn., became the proud grandparent of Andrew Sam Bogatz,
born March 6, 2001. Wayne Gibson and wife Ruby of South Burlington, Vt.,
opened a second business, R&W Gibson Promotional Products in 2001.
They continue to operate Kershner Signs. Since the early 1990s, Richard
Hubbard has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Vermont’s Long Trail
and run for the U.S. Senate in Vermont. He is currently writing a book.
George Cronk attended the annual Owls Fly-Inn at the Waybury Inn in Middlebury,
Vt., in January and sailed in the North Atlantic and Inland Coastal Waterway
with Bill and Judy Johnston (’64) Rowe in 2001. Joel Bauer, MD, is
vice chairman of the department of surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine
in New York City. Thomas Gordon is co-chairman of the lead gift committee
of the fundraising effort for the renovation of the old Barre Spaulding
High School as the new home and museum of the Vermont Historical Society.
Phyllis Koledo Lester of Monroe, Conn., retired from teaching home economics
after 22 years. She and her husband, Keith, have three adult children
and seven grandchildren, all of whom live in Connecticut. Richard Gault
has retired from his career as employment counselor with the State of
Connecticut. He bought a house in Meriden, Conn., where he lives with
his two daughters and three granddaughters.

Thomas Dow, MD, reported from Orlando, Fla., that he recently retired
and has become a full-time day trader. His first grandchild was born in
October 2001. Cheryl Allen Fuller received her PhD in nursing research
and theory development from New York University in January 2002. She is
coordinator of graduate nursing programs at College Misericordia and has
an independent practice as a women’s healthcare nurse practitioner
in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Cheryl wrote that she enjoys reading news of how
our classmates are accomplishing great things. That’s the feeling
we all have, so I encourage classmates to send news to me at the above

Brian and Lucy Beal (’68) Andrews recently returned from a nearly
three-year work assignment in Singapore. They found it to be a great experience
and a wonderful opportunity to travel in Southeast Asia. Brian has now
retired from Pratt & Whitney after 34 years, and he and Lucy make
their home in York, Maine. Edward Bailey, MD ’70, and his wife, Dena,
have moved to the North Shore in Massachusetts, where Ed is director of
North Shore Children’s Hospital, and Dena continues her work as a
speech/language pathologist. They have three children. Your class secretary
and husband Ken attended a wonderful concert, featuring the UVM Top Cats,
at the Vermont Statehouse. Norma Hansen Reynolds and husband David of
Montpelier sat with us. Norma owns and operates a ladies’ specialty
shop and continues to enjoy music. She is an ex-UVM band member. Please

Diane Bowen Reynolds wrote from her home in Flatwoods, Kent., that she
is active on several boards of directors and at the statewide conference
office of the United Methodist Women. Her husband pastors Advance Memorial
United Methodist Church. They especially enjoy their role as grandparents.
Claudia Serwer and her husband, Michael Skol, moved to New York City,
where Claudia has been assigned by the State Department to the U.S. Mission
to the United Nations. Michael has moved his consulting company to New
York as well. They enjoy the city so much that it is unlikely that they
will return to Washington, D.C., or go overseas again. They are glad to
be back home after having moved around in the Foreign Service for 27 years.

Carl Jones let us know how much he values the role Vermont Quarterly plays
in keeping him connected to memories that give value and meaning to his
life’s work. Georgia Walsh Miller is operations manager of the Abraham
Ribicoff Research Facilities Lab at the Yale Medical School. Richard Miller
is director of public works and city engineer for New Haven, Conn. Barry
Uminsky and Alma, his wife of 31 years, have been living in Bakersfield,
Calif., for the past 20 years. Alma is a teacher in the local junior high
school, and Barry has had a private optometric practice since 1972. He
looks forward to semi-retirement within the next five years. Barry and
Alma have three sons: Benjamin, UCLA class of 2003; David, Harvey Mudd
College class of 2003; and Michael, NYU class of 2004.

Michael Hurdzan was chosen this year by the UVM College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences to receive their Outstanding Alumni Award. Michael also
received recognition as 2002 Golf Course Architect of the Year by Boardroom
Magazine and was chosen to receive the Don Rossi Award, given by the Golf
Course Builders Association of America. Ralph Edelman wrote the following
“from the sunny blue skies of (Charlotte) North Carolina: Getting
a little older, a little wiser, a little milder, just a little.”
Rosemary Manning Payne and husband Edward ’91 are active on the boards
of the Addison County Regional Plan and Addison County Solid Waste. Son
Charles works for the American Bureau of Shipping in Korea as an inspector
of new construction. Son Harold is a line engineer with Lucent Technologies
in Pennsylvania. Sally Lester Lamphier of Burlington, Vt., let us know
that her son, Mark ’00, is now a UVM graduate.
