Class of '80 Mary Cotrupi-Commander was honored to be asked to be the parent representative in a sister school project involving her children, Brooke and Andrews, elementary school and the Surya Boarding School in Khandbari, Nepal. Mary traveled to Nepal last November, bringing books, school supplies, and penpal letters, and she taught dental hygiene while there. Debbie Lynch McManus continues to live in Pittsburgh while raising her three children, Ben, Olivia, and Rory. For the past six years, she has enjoyed her husbands involvement with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, and she still enjoys skiing. Debbie has crossed paths with Mike Maglio, Barnaby Myhrum, and Doug Millar, and she sends greetings to Pat Bannerman, Jeff Bacon, Mark Kevorkian, Adam Mathews, Doc, and many more old friends. She also wrote, Marc Compagnon, my son is now wearing your turtlenecks. Kathleen MacKay moved to Elmhurst, Ill., in July to become the dean of students at Elmhurst College. Micki Wojdylo married Clark Bryant, M.D. on March 17, 2001. Christopher Brown wrote, New job and a new house in Chester, N.J.; kids are growing and thinking about UVM; still skiing and traveling. All in all, life is good. Julie Richards Drewes continues to live in the Virgin Islands, managing a charter boat service. She keeps in touch with several UVM friends and hopes to return for a reunion soon. Kris Benoit Drew lives in Waterford, Conn., with her husband, John, and their children, Kate, Jeff, and Anders. Kris teaches special education in New London. Daughter Kate is a student at Wellesley College, and Kris wrote, Behaving like parents will be a challenging experience. Daniel Francis was chosen the New Jersey Governors Teacher Recognition Programs Teacher of the Year for 2001. He teaches at Cumberland Regional High School in Seabrook, N.J. Thomas Carr sent congratulations to the UVM lacrosse team from Tucson, Ariz. Sheree Clark, a partner at Sayles Graphic Design in Des Moines, Iowa, received a write up in the Des Moines Register for the mid-century furniture and art that decorate the office along with the many awards they have won over the years. Winifred McCormick wrote that her family has three UVM graduates: Janice McCormick Gansei 92, who now has her MBA; Winifred, who completed the UVM consulting teacher program; and Gregory, MD 01, who graduated from the medical school last May. Sonia Feder Masterson, husband Jim, and their five children, who live in Chatham, N.J., look forward to their yearly summer vacation on Lake George. They also like to visit campus, which evokes lots of wonderful memories for Sonia. Your class secretary and Kevin Hazen 76 met in Charlottesville, Va., last fall and plan to marry there in January 2002. We recently attended Kevins UVM reunion and enjoyed revisiting old time spots. Pelkey Coulter and husband Chris are proud to announce the birth and adoption
of their son, Nathan, in October 2000. The Coulters are happily adjusting
to parenthood in Richmond, Vt. Ragan Cary Bartlett has taught sixth grade
math and science for the past three years. She and her almost grown
children Sarah and Max live on the coast of Maine. Ragan is learning
to kayak. David Seidman, M.D., has an otolaryngology practice in Manhattan.
E. William Karbon and his wife, Melanie, are pleased to announce the birth
of their second child, Chase Alexander, who joins his sister, Mackenzie,
in their Southern California home. Kate Silvers and her husband, Rob,
moved to Maine in 1997. They have two sons, Will and Reed. Ellen Chartrand
Moody has been an ICU nurse for the past 19 years. She has two beautiful
daughters who stay busy with school and music. Ellen is attending Norwich
University for her BSN degree. Tom and Nell Handy Griffin recently celebrated
their 18th wedding anniversary. They live in Natick, Mass., with their
children, Damon and Tom. Nell is a school nurse, and Tom teaches ESL at

Lawlor, M.D., and his wife, Cathy, are still loving life in western Massachusetts.
He wrote, not quite Burlington, but close. Rich continues
to practice anesthesia in a great community hospital, which still leaves
him lots of time for Little League games, reading Harry Potter to the
kids, and visiting friends still in the Burlington area. Sue Sourdiffe
Green of Bennington, Vt., has toured Russia as a trumpet soloist with
the American Winds Concert Band. She is in the fall 2000 list of Whos
Who Among Americas Best Teachers. After more than two years in Hawaii,
Amy Perkins Moore, husband, Jim, daughter Megan, and son Sean are moving
to Newport R.I., where Jim will attend school with the Navy. Amy wrote,
Not to confuse anyone, Jim is still in the Army. Nancy Higgins
Hartman is manager of an Exxon-Mobil corporate location in Rochester,
N.Y., where she lives with her husband and two golden retrievers. Nancy
continues to ride and teach horseback riding. John Barth lives in Boulder,
Colo., with his wife, Annie, and son Kyle. John is an environmental attorney,
representing environmental organizations in citizen suit litigation under
federal environmental laws. Carolyn Rafferty Morrissey lives in Chelmsford,
Mass., with her husband, Jim, and children Kara and Erin. Carolyn works
part-time as an oncology-certified nurse. She let us know that her sister,
Julie Rafferty (85) Curtin, recently moved to Chester, N.J., with
her husband, John, and their children. Carolyn stays in touch with Judy
Gallup Veillette, who lives in Southboro, Mass., with her husband, Pierre,
and two children. She also sees Robin Russell, who lives in Tunbridge,
Vt., and Michael Deutsch 81, who lives in Sharon, Mass., with his
wife, Laura, and two children. Karla Rader Barber represented UVM at the
inauguration of the new president of North Texas College. She lives in
Dallas. Tom Leavitt represented UVM at the inauguration of the new president
of the New England Conservatory in Boston. Richard, M.D., and Catherine
Bransfield Lawlor live in Amherst, Mass. Richard practices anesthesiology
in a neighboring town hospital, and Catherine is on break from physical
therapy to stay home with their children, Michael, Patrick, and Molly.
They love coming back to Vermont as much as they can. My husband, Jonathan Rice, and I enjoyed a trip to Iceland in mid-July with our friend, William Jenney 75, G78. We had a fabulous time, and I highly recommend it. If you enjoy walking and hiking and spending time in the outdoors, then this is the place for you. Its only a 4.5-hour flight from Boston, they drive on the right side of the road, everyone speaks fluent English, and its not overrun with tourists. The country is very clean, and there is a variety of things to enjoy: geysers, hot springs and mud spots, glaciers, volcanoes, fjords, black sand plains (complete with sandstorms), too many waterfalls to count, farms with lots of sheep (where else would those famous Icelandic wool sweaters come from?), whale watching, ocean cliffs teeming with Arctic terns, seagulls, and puffins, etc. Karen Bellor Renstrom of Hartford, Conn., is a happily married mother of three, who works in the open-heart surgery recovery area. She also is working on her masters degree to become an acute care nurse practitioner. She said that through the years she has been grateful for the educational foundation she received at UVM. Her husband teaches in an urban school. Karen Lamson McKenny lives in South Burlington, Vt., with her husband, Hugh David 85. She has worked at Fletcher Allen Health Center since graduation, and she currently is a nurse and educator in the cardiac catheterization lab. Since they wrote four years ago, the family has welcomed a set of twin boys, Alex and Nick, joining daughter Katie. Dave works at IBM. Again this summer, their best friends John and Ann Rosenthal (81) Quinlan and their children, Patrick, Erin, and Jacqueline, came up from Fairfax, Va., to visit for a week as they have done for many years. This year, they all hiked Camels Hump and visited the Shelburne Museum. Karen said that she looks forward to reading about what fellow Pi Phis and other UVM friends have been doing. Catherine Murtha Bursey continues to work at Yale New Haven Hospital in the case management department. She completed her MSN degree a few years ago. Catherine lives in Naugatuck, Conn., with her husband and son Patrick. Diane Sadlak Stewart sent greetings from Santa Maria, Calif., where she still loves physical therapy and her work in a rehab center. Diane and her husband have three children, Micaela, Aaron, and Alexandra. Cynthia Wheeler Thunem and husband Eric are enjoying life in New Canaan, Conn., with their sons, Ned and Peter. Cynnie has retired from a successful 18-year marketing career to work at home. Eric is an investment banker in New York City.
I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer. I am proud to announce that we have added a new member to our family. Sarah Laurie was born on June 25, 2001. So I dont have to tell you all what I did this summer. Sarah and her sister, Lila, kept me very busy. Barbara Guttman wrote from Rochester, N.Y., where she lives with her husband, Steve Swart. She recently received the Neuro-Oncology Social Worker of the Year Award from the National Brain Tumor Foundation for her innovative work with adult brain tumor patients and their families. In addition to her work as an oncology social worker, Barbara enjoys boating on Lake Ontario, yoga, and softball. Andrew Lundeen sent greetings to classmates. He wrote that he continues to live in Homer, N.Y., with his wife, Julie, and children Hannah and Beck. Andrew is a financial analyst with Buckbee Mears in Cortland, N.Y., a manufacturer of high precision aperture masks for television and computer monitors. Mary Gribbin is working towards a degree in landscape horticulture. She started a landscaping business specializing in California native design, aesthetic pruning, and composting. She enjoys hiking, backpacking, bike riding, and playing guitar. Janet Hoberman Lipkin lives in Concord, Mass., with her husband, Stephen, and two daughters. She is a clinical nurse specialist in community health, and she volunteers her time to serve on school and community committees. Karen Gonnella Stein was recently named vice president of a strategic business unit of Mykrolis Corporation in Bedford, Mass. She lives in Tewkesbury, Mass., with her husband, Tom, and sons Tyler and David. Ltc. Jay Overton wrote that he, Ltc. Steve Cray 89 and Major Hank Harder 87 of the Vermont Air Guard flew F-16s in combat sorties over Iraq during Operation Southern Watch last fall. He let us know that they flew the UVM colors over the command barracks for a day. He added, Go, Cats! Denise Bennett Minnerly just finished an art show, and she also has had two childrens books published. Denise lives in Rowayton, Conn., with her husband and two daughters. Gayle Voelker Brown now owns and operates the Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center, Vt. (Gayle, do you ship?) Kris Muller is currently living in Reston, Va., and working as a partner in the Price Waterhouse Coopers technology, info comm., and entertainment practice. Kris gets home to Vermont frequently to see her sister, Kathy Muller 76. Joel and Cynthia Woolf Davis live in Trumbull, Conn., with their son, Ben, who was recently awarded first place in a Connecticut literary contest. Cynthia owns the Finish Line, a decorative painting business in Fairfield County, Conn. She recently was on a team of muralists working at the Connecticut Childrens Museum renovation in New Haven, and she will travel to England with a design team to faux paint an estate this fall. Scott Handler is now working in Cambridge, Mass., with Biopure, a bio-pharmaceutical company His wife, Marion Larson 83, took a temporary assignment for a year heading up the states hunter education program. Last summer, they spent nearly a month vacationing in Alaska.They stayed near Camp Denali and enjoyed seeing many new birds and plants. Thanks to all of you who wrote in. How is everyones year going? I hope the year has brought happiness and good spirits to all. As reunion becomes a sweet memory, my mail continues to dwindle, so everyone who has not written ever or who has not written in a while, please drop me a line and let us all know whats going on in your life. Barry Churchill wrote to tell me that after graduation he moved to Florida and got into the golf business. Upon missing many snowy winters, Barry moved back to the great white North! Barry now lives in Jericho, Vt. Jonathan G91 and Sara Arnett (87, G91) Henry thoroughly enjoy their work at the University of Maine in admissions and student services. They said its hard to be a Catamount fan in Black Bear country. Jonathan said hello to all 80s Top Cats and the loyal Cat Heads fan club. Cynthia Malinowski Driscoll is living in East Kingston, N.H., with husband Wayne and daughter Heather. They welcomed the newest member of their family last August. Cynthia spends time with Sue Bokat Stone and her family, who purchased a home in Exeter, N.H. She sent a big hello to all her old basketball friends: Sheila, Renee, Candice, Margaret, and Lisa. Lastly, Kendall Mix of Waterbury, Vt., was named to the Champlain College Board of Trustees. Kendall is president of KamTech Plastics in Montpelier, Vt. She earned her MBA from Dartmouths Tuck School of Business in 1989, and she also serves on the board of directors for the Associated Industries of Vermont. Josh Powers completed his PhD in business and higher education, and he is now on the faculty at Indiana State University. He recently skied Tuckermans, and he was pleased that he could still do it with at least a little style.
John Schwab wrote to say that he worked in radio sales with CBS and Infinity Broadcasting for 15 years before taking his current position as director of sports marketing with Fox Television/WTXF-TV. In June 2000, he got remarried to Tracy Dundon. He is also still a devoted reggae music fan as well as a bass guitar player, an inline skater and a skier. Thomas and Lori Beaumont Martin had been living in Maine for ten years before Tom took a position with Ernst & Young in Boston. They are building a house in Newbury, Mass., where they plan to have fun with their three sons, Tom, Patrick, and Nicholas. They still keep in touch with alumni friends. Susan MacFarlane Hamisch has lived in New Hampshire for the past 11 years. Her daughter, Katie, is now two, and she has two Belgian sheepdogs and two horses. Susan works part-time for Cadec Corp., testing software and managing their Lotus Notes system. Mike Bursell is a financial analyst at IBM in Williston, Vt. His son, Jordan, celebrated his third birthday last May, and daughter Samantha will be six in September. Mikes wife, Linda Meyer (89) Bursell runs their company, Bursell Financial Services. Karen Page is currently working in a medical cardiology step-down unit in a large hospital in central Florida. She wrote that she thinks of her nursing classmates often and hopes they are doing well. Krister Adams is a housing developer for the Vermont State Housing Authority, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable housing in Vermont. He went to graduate school for land use planning in Denver. Krister lives in Stowe, Vt., with his 14-year-old yellow Lab Buck. Gordon and Robin Blecker Dixon are still living in Stowe, Vt., where their home-based design/build business specializing in New England farmhouses (built new to look old) is going strong. Their son, Billy, joined his sister Lucy and brother Calvin in May 2000. Robin attended reunion without Gordon, who was off in Alaska on an expedition with some friends. They made the summit of Mount McKinley on June 14, an amazing experience for him.

Its great to be getting news from people that we havent heard from in a long time, if at all Risa Dean Holmes is now living in Evergreen, Colo., and she has two daughters, Kiana and Mali. Shed love to hear from old friends at risachris@ quest.net. Marian Bradley-Kohr welcomed a new baby daughter, Camille, on December 17, 2000. Marian is currently living in Venice, Calif., and she works at Columbia Records making music videos. Pamela Berg Nemeth lives so far west in New Jersey (almost in Pennsylvania) that it doesnt even seem like New Jersey. She wrote that she, her husband, and sons Jake and Zack, have the best of country and suburban living all in one. Pamela is still trying to find a publisher for her anthology of roommate horror stories. Matt Surico 94 illustrated it, and she would welcome any suggestions. Cheryl Hertubise Bey lives near Winston-Salem, N.C., on the Yadkin River. She and her husband, Dick, a neurologist, have two daughters, Maris and Eva. She is a dietitian, but she is currently home taking care of the girls and loving it. Jeff and Kristen Lombard Smith have been living in Cincinnati since their wedding in 1989. They have a son, Brian, and they plan to adopt a baby from Korea. The Smiths wrote that they love visitors. Art Gluck wrote that he is currently living in Denver and teaching sixth seventh, and eighth grades. Art and his wife, Signe, have a son, Keenan, and they encourage UVM friends to stop by for some snow riding. Dr. Kyla Lee is finishing her residency in internal medicine at Gunderson Lutheran in La Crosse, Wisc. Great news for Mike Dwyer, executive director of the National Automotive Radiator Service Association in Pennsburg, Pa.: He has earned the Certified Association Executive designation from the American Society of Association Executives in June 2001.
Joseph Gratz and his wife, Gina, live in Evansville, Ind. They were expecting a visit from Joes brother, David Percey 85, his wife, Sally, and daughter Dara Lynn when the Blue Angels performed during Evansvilles Freedom Festival. Joe is assistant director of intramural sports at the University of Southern Indiana. Jeff and Janet Alliet Williams live in Pelham, N.Y., with their daughters, Kyra and Natalie. Jeff works in the real estate investment banking group at CDC North America, and Janet stays home with their daughters. Kristin Moshonas is living happily in New York City and working as the director of marketing and creative services for Town & Country magazine. She recently returned from a trip to Morocco and was looking forward to traveling to Vietnam. W. Scott Meador and his wife, Eileen, of Larchmont, N.Y., recently welcomed identical twin girls. Scott celebrated his 10th year with Merrill Lynch in New York City. Robert Hentschel and his wife, Lauren, welcomed their second child, William, on March 21, 2000. They live in Needham, Mass. Robert and Marie Driscoll (G86) Shuman sent greetings to UVM friends from Oswego, N.Y., where they are happily restoring their own version of This Old House. Christina OBrien Cowles and husband Stephen, a 1989 graduate of the University of Rochester, announced the birth of their son, Jonathan Jack Williams Cowles, on March 10, 2001. They make a home for Jack and their daughter, Jordan, in Chandler, Ariz. Jill Talbot Huard and husband Dan welcomed their second daughter, Lisa Marie, on April 11, 2000. Lisa joins her sister, Katie, in the familys Waterville, Maine, home. Jill has been an IT technical specialist at Saunders for the past seven years. She enjoyed seeing Victoria Teta 87 last summer, and she has found other UVM friends on the Internet. Jill can be reached via email at jhuard@panax.com. He joins his twin brother and sister David and Nancy in making their parents happy and hectic. Linda Cornell Hatcher spent a fabulous weekend on Cape Cod with Tracy Keller, Beth Simpson Hahr, Andrea Melanson Weilbrenner, Johanna Thackston, and Julia Volcjak last October. Linda and her husband, Gerry, live in Danbury, Conn., with their sons Brian, Nicholas, and Will. Robert Corcoran wrote from Tulsa, Okla., that he misses Vermont. He is executive director of Helping Hands of Tulsa, with seven employees, and he enjoys working with many other non-profit agencies. He invites UVM friends to visit him in Tulsa.
Greetings! Im sure you are all busy with the renewed energy fall brings, along with the anticipation of the approaching holiday season. As always, this is the time when we all probably miss standing at the top of College Street and taking in that incredible view of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks in fall foliage. It was great to hear from SO many of you this time around. I think I may have sounded a bit desperate for news in the last column. In any case, congratulations to Kim Slomin McCarvey and her husband, Dave. They welcomed a happy, healthy little boy, Jonah, in June. Congratulations also to Carrie Mided, who got married in Los Angeles last June. Great news for Mike and Beth Klauser Papariello: they adopted a beautiful baby boy, Kevin Lee, from South Korea in May. They are living in South Burlington, Vt., and said to say hi to everyone. David Boisoneau finished his residency in otolaryngology/head and ENT surgery, and he will be joining a practice in Mystic, Conn. He and his wife, Kristin, and their two daughters live in Ledyard, Conn., and they look forward to renewing their UVM ties. Major Jon Dix and his wife, Veronica, welcomed their first child, William Fletcher, in July 2000. Jon is currently serving a one-year tour in Seoul, Korea, and he expects to rejoin his family in September 2001. Amy Raab Macaluso and her husband, Kevin, live in Annapolis, Md., with their daughter, Sophia Elise. Amy is a photographer, specializing in weddings, and Kevin teaches U.S. history in a private high school. Congratulations to Barbara Doty Gurican and her husband, Michael, who welcomed their first child, Jacob Julian, in October 2000. They live in Milwaukee, Wisc., where Barbara is a corporate attorney. Bryn Ann Fenton attended Eva Fettigs wedding to Jim Rusconi in San Francisco last May. Eva is a district manager at AT&T, and she and her husband live in Berkeley. Elizabeth Bell 90, who lives in Seattle and works for Princess Cruise Lines, was in attendance as well. Bryn and her husband live in Sunnyvale, Calif., where she works for Cisco Systems in the corporate marketing department. Jennifer Laden Carpenter lives in Fairfield, Vt., with Mark, her husband of 10 years, and their sons, Nicholas and Noah. Jennifer has taught at Enosburg Elementary School for the past 12 years. She occasionally sees her freshman roommate, Beth Fletcher OBrien, who is married with two daughters. Beth is principal of Montgomery Elementary School. Jennifer hears from Deirdre Hayes, who lives in England and visits the States every year. Deirdre and Jennifer get together with their suitemates, Janette Chicoine Roberts and Bonnie Greaves (88) Bellavance. Janette teaches at Browns Middle School, and Bonnie lives in Cabot, Vt., with her two daughters. Jennifer also keeps in touch with Patty Kennedy Ward, who lives in Clinton, Mass., with her husband, Michael. Tina Taft Deckers and her husband, Peter, have a new son, Graham Christopher, born last March in Avon, Conn. John and Gail Follett Suitor live in Middleburg, Va. John is chair of the department of history and social sciences at Foxcroft School, and Gail is a professional organizer and learning specialist. Elizabeth 16 and Madison 22 keep them busy. Alexandra Petas Pappas and her husband, Dean, welcomed their second child, Eleni Eugenie, in July 2000. She joins big brother Billy in the familys Katonah, N.Y., home. Raymond and Wendy Tayler Quesnel live in Pfafftown, N.C., near Winston-Salem. They both teach upper-school math at Forsyth Country Day School. Wendy will be math department chair next year, and Ray, who is the varsity basketball coach and assistant athletic director, will also be assistant head of the Upper School. Their daughter, Kelly, and son Jonathan also attend Forsyth. Lawrence Ault made the journey from Cleveland for two awesome days of skiing at Mad River Glen last March. He sent greetings to the Wing 4th crew. You know who you are. Sam Sloane and his wife, Courtney, have returned to the States after living in Budapest and Madrid for several years. Sam ran his own international strategic development firm. They now live in Texas, where he is heading investor relations for a natural gas exploration company in Wyoming and Texas. They have also started their own on-line art gallery, www.redskyart.com. Sam has been in touch with several classmates: Gary Owen in Atlanta, Bettina Ruloff Reynertson in Connecticut, and Jim Prusky, John Wright, and Melissa Bergen 92 in New York City. Michelle worked for 11 years as a CPA, and she is now home with her boys in Mandeville, La. Stefanie Friedman-Feidelson lives in Bedford, N.Y., and loves being a full-time mom to Lucy and Sara. She still sees Dana Cohen-Tedone. Mike Grimm wrote to say that his wife, Lauren 90, has just finished illustrating a childrens book called Dancing on the Moon, which deals with SIDS and sibling loss. Kelly Hartnett Forney lives in Stonington, Conn., with her husband, Scott, and son Zachery. She works at Electric Boat Corporation in Groton as a senior mechanical engineer, which she says is really fun and challenging with a fair amount of travel. Sharon Boyle-Connelly, husband Glen, and sons Ethan and Rowan lived in Washington for eight years and moved to Wareham, Mass., several years ago. She received her MSW degree from NYU in 1992, and she is home with her kids right now. It was great to run into Ann Taggart 90, who lives in Portland and works for Pfizer. She keeps in touch with lots of UVMers, and life seems to be treating her well. Janet Levi Wild and her husband, David, live in Plainview, N.Y. She has two daughters, Galia and Hannan, and a newborn son Leo. Life couldnt be better. On that upbeat note, I hope you are all doing well, too. Please keep the news coming.
