What is 4-H Growing Connections?
It is a garden-enhanced nutrition education
program for youth that includes:
- planning and planting a garden,
- developing nutrition and cooking skills,
- building food security and hunger
awareness,
and
- enhancing food safety and preservation
skills.
Who is the program for?
4-H Growing Connections is for all
youth age 5-18. Youth don’t have to be in a 4-H club to participate,
and
it’s free!
Who will bring the program to my
community?
UVM Extension offers the 4-H Growing
Connections curriculum and training to educators and volunteers
interested
in leading fun and interactive gardening and cooking activities for
youth.
Where does the program take place?
The program takes place at almost any site
with adult supervision.
What if no garden space or kitchen
facility
is available at the site?
4-H Growing Connections can be
implemented
using container gardens and/or electrical cookware if necessary.
How many youth can be involved?
Youth participate in groups, and activities
are tailored to the size of the group. (It is best to have one adult
per
6-8 youth.)
How long is each hands-on class?
Class length is from 1 1/2 to 2 hours and
is determined by the needs of the group.
How many classes will be offered to
each
group?
The curriculum is designed so that each
group of students will be offered four or more classes.
How can I bring this program to my
community?
Contact the 4-H Growing Connections coordinator for more information about programs youth can join, to
order
a copy of the curriculum, or to participate in a training workshop for
educators and volunteers.
