LAMPREY RESEARCH
Lake Champlain Sea Grant Extension staff is involved in a Great Lakes Fishery Commission-funded research project to study the movement and populations of sea lampreys in Lake Champlain and its tributaries. With the help of volunteers, who collect adult lampreys during fishing activities, we are tracking lamprey migration patterns, using this information to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of control measures.
We used a number of methods to recruit volunteers, including a brochure, paid advertisements, targeted mailings, and face-to-face contact at major fish derbies. Information about the project and its findings has been shared with the public through a Web site (http://www.uvm.edu/snr/lamprey) and local television program (http://www.lcbp.org/c2k/lamprey4.htm).
