Lake Champlain Sea Grant's educational efforts focus on increasing awareness among youths of our treasured water resources and what can be done to monitor and protect them. We work with schools and in non-traditional learning environments to offer training to science educators and interactive, age-appropriate activities, including stream monitoring and lake-friendly gardening, for school-age children.
Our educational activities, which target students from kindergarten through high school, fit under two primary programs: Watershed Alliance and Youth Watershed Stewardship.
The Watershed Alliance, a hands-on environmental monitoring outreach project, provides secondary schools and youth groups in Vermont and New York with the necessary support, resources, and technical assistance to explore local watershed issues. We support in school and youth program activities that provide water quality education and promote involvement in watershed protection. Sea Grant is a partner in the Poultney Mettowee Environmental Expo for Vermont and New York middle school students and the Youth Watershed Stewardship Program, the ECHO Explainers water quality education program for underserved high school youth, the Vermont Education for Sustainability Project for elementary school students with the Burlington School District, and a summer water quality and gardening program for underserved grade school youth.
