Background of the Teagle Grant
In early 2007, the UVM chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was asked by the
national office of The Phi Beta Kappa Society to participate in "the
Teagle Project," which was to consist of “Deliberation about Things
That Matter." The society had surveyed
its members and determined that what they most valued about their
educational experience was not any particular
information or content of particular courses, but rather a more generic
skill which can be identified as "deliberative
thought." The Teagle Grant has allowed the alpha chapter of
Vermont, located at the University of Vermont, to sponsor a series of
four public events designed to foster and reflect on such deliberative
thought. More
information about the Teagle Grant.
The public events are the tip of the iceberg at UVM. Behind the
scenes, there is a one-credit Honors College course (HCOL 194b), as
well as an event coordinator for each event. The coordinator has
put together the readings, recruited a knowledgeable panel, and decided
on a structure for each event.
The events are free and open to the public.
