CATEGORIES OF MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the Alpha of Vermont, Phi Beta Kappa, is composed of the following categories:

MEMBERS IN COURSE in the Alpha of Vermont are elected by the chapter upon recommendation of the Membership Committee. Distinction in scholarship and high moral character shall be prerequisite to election.

UNDERGRADUATE members in course are chosen from the junior and senior classes in the University, but not before they have completed the first semester of the junior year.

GRADUATE members in course are chosen from those who are candidates for advanced degrees in the University, but not before they have completed the final requirements for such degree.

ALUMNI MEMBERS and HONORARY MEMBERS are elected by the chapter according to rules spelt out in the chapter constitution. A maximum number of three members in each of these categories may be chosen during one Phi Beta Kappa triennium (the present triennium will end with the fortieth triennial meeting of the Society, the 2003 Phi Beta Kappa Council).

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. Persons elected to membership by other chapters of the Society who become officers or members of the teaching staff of the University of Vermont become thereby associate members of the chapter with full rights and privileges.
