Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776, is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious honorary society in America, with chapters currently associated with 270 of the foremost institutions of higher education in the United States. The three stars on its key represent Friendship, Morality and Literature (the latter word in its eighteenth-century meaning of "learning"). From its outset, the Phi Beta Kappa Society has fostered and recognized excellence in liberal studies. Its name derives from the Greek phrase Philosophia Biou Kybernetes: "Love of wisdom is the guide of life.

The grandfather clock shown in the picture to the right disappeared from the Phi Beta Kappa Room in March 1997. Persons who may have any information about the clock - and especially leads to its recovery - are asked to contact the UVM Police (refer to Incident Number 97UV00687).

Also recently disappeared from the room was a plaster cast in miniature of the frieze of the Parthenon, loaned to the Phi Beta Kappa chapter by Wheeler family members in 1943 for display in an appropriate University setting. (University Police Services Incident Number 96UV01018).
