1Variety sites: H=Hort. Research Center, So. Burlington, VT; M=Milton, VT. Average alpha is of those years data taken (see # years in next column). Appreciation is expressed to Dr. Stephen Kenny, WSU, Prosser, Wash. for analyses. Yields in fresh weight (oz) of cones per hill. Data are means of replicate hills, 1-4 bines per hill. Harvests by Matthew H. Wood .

1997 Season Outline

Fertilization-- Lawnsense pelletized fertilizer applied to hills in mid-May. Heavy top-dressings of compost were used to improve soil fertility at regular intervals thereafter

Training on strings/stripping lower leaves-- By 5/22 strings were up at both Milton and HRC and 2-4 bines were being trained up each string. On 6/11 leaves were stripped from the lower 3 feet of bines at both HRC and Milton, plants are 2 ft. above 7 ft. crosswire at Milton! Training and stripping continues for almost every visit to the hop yards for the rest of the season.

Weed control-- Hand weeding close to the small plants started on 5/24, about 2 weeks later than I should have. Round-up used for weed and grass control at Milton on 5/28, 6/11, 6/30, and at end of season. Hand weeded and raked on 8/3. At HRC roundup was used on 6/11 and 7/2, and hand weeding and raking was done on 7/16 and other times to a lesser extent. Round-up applied to hills at HRC at end of season for weed and grass control

Predatory Mites released-- Phytoseiulus persimilis released as a predator against the two spotted spider mite. These predators were ordered in anticipation of a mite problem that never happened. Predators arrived in the mail and were released anyway at both HRC and Milton.

Harvest-- took place at HRC on 8/24 and 9/4, and at Milton on 8/25, 8/26, 8/27, 8/30, and 8/31. All cones were hand picked and the yield was recorded by taking the fresh weights of cones from each plant. Once dried, samples were taken from each variety for alpha-acid analyses. The rest were stored in a freezer for use at a later date.
