Dealing with Technical Problems in Rehearsal

If there is a technical problem in a passage, analyze what is causing the problem and try to isolate the specific skill involved (i.e. fingering, shifting, bowing, etc.) Many technical problems can be overcome through correct diagnosis and effective remediation.

Often, a musical problem is caused by a technical problem. Here are some examples:

Poor Intonation - caused by a bad fingering, a bad shift, or bad left hand position and/or finger shape

Poor tone. phrasing or dynamics - caused by poor choice of bowing.

The symptom is the bad musical sound. The cause is bad technique. A teacher who addresses causes instead of symptoms in rehearsal will be much more successful.

Teaching is a give and take process. Be flexible and do not use intimidation.
