Welcome to the University of Vermont McNair Scholars Program! Authorized by the United States Congress in 1989, the national program commemorates the accomplishments of the late Ronald McNair, PhD, NASA astronaut aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. Introduced at UVM in 2004, the mission of the McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is to work with undergraduates to increase the number of first generation, limited income and underrepresented minority students who earn a doctorate. The McNair Scholars Program provides students with critical academic, research and professional experiences to enhance their competitiveness in gaining admission to doctoral programs. Students with majors in computer science, education, engineering, humanities, math, natural and social sciences, nursing & allied health sciences, and statistics are encouraged to apply.

McNair Scholar Jiaxin Yu was one of ten undergraduates presenting
research at the 2008 McNair Symposium. J's research topic: Comparison of
Myxobolus cerebralis infection in worms collected in Montana vs. Vermont.

New during the 2007 - 2008 Academic Year and Continuing in 2008 - 2009!
First year, sophomore and transfer students interested in applying to the McNair
Scholars Program in the future now have the opportunity to apply for housing in the
Living / Learning Center and become part of a vibrant residential learning community.
With this arrangement - subject to customary room and board fees - participants reside
in the SURF Suite (Scholarly Undergraduate Research Focus), interact on a regular
basis with current McNair Scholars and alumni, and engage in a project of service to
