Turn on your computer and it will prompt you for some information that will help you initially set it up.
There are a number of applications that you will probably want to install on your new computers.
1. At UVM software (http://www.uvm.edu/software) you can download some useful programs. You will want the following programs. 
MACs: Download for version OSX unless otherwise noted.
  • Norton's Antivirus for Macs (please note, first download the program for version 9 and install it, then in MAC OSX, download the OSX supplement. This program will help protect your computer from a gamut of viruses that are plaguing the networks. Luckily for Macs. most viruses are PC based. 
  • Fetch-File Transfer Protocal (FTP) will move  files to and from different computers. You will use this to save files to your zoo account so you can access them from home and work. 
  • Adobe Reader will let you read a growing number of documents saved in .pdf format both on and off the web.
Optional
  • Eudora (e-mail program). This is a computer-based e-mail program that is easy to use and can be used both from work and from home. 
WINDOWS

  • Voyager:File Transfer Protocal (FTP) will move  files to and from different computers. You will use this to save files to your zoo account so you can access them from home and work. 
  • VSN client (airport) will allow you to connect to the wireless UVM client that is currently in Waterman, Lafayette and the Library. There are plans to extend this throughout the campus.
Optional
  • Eudora (e-mail program). This is a computer-based e-mail program that is easy to use and can be used both from work and from home. 
2. Install the software you have been given: Insert the first disk into your CD drive and follow screen instructions.
MACs:
  • Microsoft Office: wordprocessor, powerpoint (slide shows), excel (spreadsheet), outlook (e-mail).
  • Adobe Elements :working with graphics and creating graphical text for web pages
WINDOWS
  • Microsoft Office: wordprocessor, powerpoint(slide shows), excel (spreadsheet), outlook (e-mail).
  • Adobe Elements :working with graphics and creating graphical text for web pages
  • Pinnacle Studio: digital video capture and edit software
3. Download NETSCAPE 7.0 from the web.
4. Download Macromedia Flash Player (For MAC OSX)
