McAllister took this photograph prior to February 13, 1940 when a fire decimated the New Sherwood Hotel on the corner of Church and Cherry Streets.(1) The New Sherwood Hotel was an impressive seven-story edifice designed with its lobby on the second floor, leaving retail space at the street level. A J.C. Penny store moved into this retail space in 1928, followed by a Sears & Roebuck in 1937.(2) The building visible at the left is the Abernethy building, constructed in 1894 with street front retail space and apartments above. Upon opening, a portion of this retail space was let by the H.W. Allen & Company clothing retailers.(3) The next building on the left at 10 Church Street was built in 1937 in the Art Deco style as an addition to the Abernethy building.(4) (1) Postcard, UVM Bailey Howe Library, Special Collections. After the 1940 fire, a new building was constructed a year later to house both the J.C. Penny store and the Sears & Roebuck. After Sears & Roebuck relocated to the Shelburne Road Plaza in 1964, J.C. Penny took control of the building. Penny’s remodeled the storefront in 1984 and updated its sign in 1989.(5) The location is currently occupied by Borders Booksellers and Café. The Art Deco building still stands at 10 Church Street and is currently occupied by a sushi restaurant. (5) Blow, 148. |
