This image from August of 1930 shows the street project progressing at full speed.  The heavy equipment pictured in the center of the image appears to be removing the rubble of the older street surface.  To the left of that equipment stands the two story commercial building at 146 to 148 North Champlain on the corner of North Street and North Champlain.  The building offers commercial space with storefront, awnings and recessed double door entrance on the first floor and apartments on the floor above.  The wood framed, clapboarded building is trimmed with capped wall and corner pilasters running from above the storefront to support the bracketed cornice capping the flat linteled four bay North Street façade and three visible bays on the North Champlain street façade. At the very edge of the frame can be seen part of a peaked lintel above a center window. Built between 1889 and 1900, [1] the building housed the drugstore opened by Eugene Gosselin around the same time as the buildings construction. [2]   Gosselin’s Drugstore would operate at this location, and for a period at 194 North Street, for better part of the 20th Century. [3]

The construction equipment largely blocks the view of the buildings running east on North Street from the Gosselin’s Drugstores, however on the other side of the street we get a narrow glimpse of the Vincent Shoe Store that occupied the first floor retail space at 144 North Champlain Street discussed in the previous image. [4]   Here we can see the large display windows and recessed double entry door.  Above the storefront a bracketed cornice resolves the retail façade.  A man with rolled up sleeves sweeps the dirt from the stairs.

Here again we can comment on the street work being done on this section of North Street in the summer of 1930.  Visible are the bent and leaning electrical poles and lack of street curbs. The electric rail track has already been removed and the street is being prepared to receive a new substructure and re surfacing.
