This course is an introduction to societies of the Middle East as depicted in ethnography, anthropology’s principle writing genre. The readings focus on several themes, primarily in the Arab Middle East: gender roles and relations, popular culture, the religious life and practices of Muslim populations, and ethnic and national identities. We will examine work on Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Israel/Palestine, and Yemen.
