A close-up of the hole above the plunger through which the pumped water exits and rises to the spout. 
A small clear glass plug seats inside the center of the plunger, forcing the water pumped from the lower container up to the spout.
The lower part of the plunger with most of the string removed. The string seems to be a modern replacement for the original packing material.
A layer of what looks a lot like grass beneath the string.
The lower valve is a purple glass plug partially filled with mercury. The plug is ground down to fit the inside of the glass tube.
