THE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER OF STUDYING ABROAD IN ITALY

PRIMA
Before you apply to any program, come and see me.  (Ideally, this should happen after you have a few programs in mind and a few brochures in hand.)  If you are in my classes, especially, I can help you select the program that best fits your needs, wants, and abilities.  In many cases, you will also need a letter from your language instructor; if that is me, I can write a stronger letter for you if I know why you selected the program and why that program is the best one for you.

Before you enroll in classes through your Study Abroad Program, you should also see me to determine which Italian classes are at your level and which will fulfill your requirements for your Italian or Italian Studies Minor.

DURANTE
While in Italy, you can e-mail me with academic questions pertaining to UVM-- such as what courses are available for you when you get back, what you will need to take for your Italian or Italian Studies Minor, etc.  My email address is cmazzoni@zoo.uvm.edu

While in Italy, remember to always, ALWAYS bring back all your work:  syllabi above all, textbooks, homework, anything having to do with the classes you take.  This helps your transfer advisor (me, usually) evaluate transfer credits and level.

While in Italy, take advantage of every opportunity you find to practice Italian.  Do not hang out with Americans--you will have your entire life to do that.  Don't speak English, for the same reason.  This is a unique opportunity to both learn a language and get to know a culture in depth, but it is ultimately up to you to make the most of it.

DOPO
After you return to UVM find ways to keep up your Italian:  enrolling in the appropriate Italian class is the most efficient way, and you can also come to the Tavola Italiana as well as watch Italian films from the collection at Bailey-Howe, the LRC. or at your video store.  Now that you have devoted so much time and energy to perfecting Italian, it would be a shame to let it go!

After you return to UVM, it is especially important to come see me if you go on a program that is not yet officially recognized by UVM, because I will need to determine transfer of credits, etc.  If you belong to this group, absolutely do not forget to bring back with you (and to my office) any academic material pertaining to the classes you took in Italy.

BUON LAVORO E BUON DIVERTIMENTO!!
