Tips From the TAS:

  1.  Hook should be obvious at beginning of your your presentation.  Be creative!
  2.  Bring your Flash Drive when presenting!
  3.  End with "Thank You".  Do not say "That's about it."
  4.  OK to occasionally walk (don't pace) and return to the neutral position.
  5.  Keep hair out of your face.  No Hats (unless part of costume).  Don't chew gum while speaking.
  6.  Pacing is the speed of your presentation (which should be slow).  Don't pace back  and forth.  Return to the neutral position (stand tall arms at sides), avoid crossing legs, leaning on tables or desks, and fidgeting.
  7.  Intro: repeat your name even if MC says it.
  8.  If you make a mistake, DON'T APOLOGIZE, just keep going!
  9.  Pause for effect - figure out where you want your audience to really pay attention - insert pause (two full seconds) there.
  10.  During a presentation, no cell phone use, no talking or distracting sounds, don't leave or enter the room.
  11. Master of Ceremonies should stand in front of room, and speak loud and clear when introducing speaker and prompting for questions.
  12. Critique form manager should collect critiques after each speaker and give to speaker.
  13. **** FOLLOW THE CRITIQUE SHEETS **** and practice in front of friends and get feedback!

Assignments & Announcements:

  1. Practice your informational presentation in front of others and get feedback.
  2. Quiz on PRESENT YOURSELF today.
  3. Check Syllabus (CALS 001, CALS 183) speaking schedule for when you are presenting and your lab role.
  4. Outside Speech Critique assignment.  UVM lecture calendar site. Example: Al Gore Tues Oct 6 evening at Ira Allen Chapel
  5. Class Attendance Policy from syllabus: "Unexcused absences from lecture or lab result in 1% reduction of your final course grade for each unexcused absence.  Attendance will be taken each lecture and lab.  If you are late, you will be marked absent.  This is not a class to cut and get notes from someone else. This is a class where you must come to lecture and lab a few minutes early every time and be ready to participate for the entire lecture or lab.  Athletes are excused only for Varsity Games (and work is expected to be made up within one week).  No students have earned an A in this course who have had more than two unexcused absences. If you can not make a class, you must notify your instructor before the class.  Notification after the class will result in a zero for that class and assignment.  If you miss a speaking assignment without notifying your instructor before the class or if you miss a speaking assignment because you were not prepared, you will earn a zero for that assignment. Only extreme legitimate prior-notification absences (death in the family, serious illness, or accident) will be made up.  For an excuse to be legitimate you must contact your college's Deans office (for CALS Deans Office Rose Laba, 656-0289, rlaba@uvm.edu) and they will notify Dr. Leonard.  This should be a very rare occurrence.  The TAs and Dr. Leonard need to hear from the Deans Office for an excuse to be legitimate."
  6. CALS 001 students, visit with your academic advisor and have them sign the Advisor Meeting FormJoin a club or organization.
