English 104: Language Awareness
This course is an introduction to the study of language involving, in any
given semester, five or six of the following topics: language acquisition;
the history of the English language; a survey of recent theories of grammar;
lexicology (word histories); dialects (regional and social varieties of
American English); semantics (the study of meaning); gender differences
in language; the study of bias and prejudice through language; non-verbal
communication; sign language; the language of advertising; the language
of politics (propaganda and doublespeak).
Required text: Language Awareness, ed. Paul Eschholz,
Alfred Rosa, and Virginia Clark. Eighth edition. New York: Bedford/St.
Martin's Press, 2000.
Requirements: A series of quizzes and a final.
Prerequisites: No experience in the study of language is required.
