The Mission of the Office of Affirmative Action Equal Opportunity (AAEO) is to create a diverse, nondiscriminatory learning and working environment for the University of Vermont community by promoting inclusion, respect and equity.

The Office of Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity serves multiple roles:

• Assists the President, Provost and Senior Management in ensuring that the University continues to be a diverse and equitable environment, through the promotion of equal opportunity in formulating and implementing policies and strategies for enhancing the diversity and equity of the University.
• Articulates a dynamic vision and provides institutional leadership in designing and implementing campus-wide program in support of diversity in a manner respectful of individual differences and perspectives.
• Works collaboratively with existing offices, as well as internal and external constituencies to infuse diversity and equity goals into every aspect of the university community.
• Develops, promotes and monitors programs for effective methods of recruiting and retaining a diverse community of faculty, staff and students.
• Protects against bias, unfairness and other improper treatment by serving as a neutral, impartial dispute resolution resource by providing independent confidential, informal and formal assistance in the resolution of concerns and critical situations to all levels of the administration, staff, faculty and students.
